How to Hang a Picture!1. Decide where to hang your picture. Avoid heat sources, steamy bathrooms or direct sunlight.
2. Hold the picture up and make a light pencil mark on the wall where the top edge of the frame will be.
3. Choose a hook. The hook's packaging often tells how much weight the hook can hold. You should also consider what type of wall you have. Drywall is soft enough for you to easily insert a nail-and-hook set (known as a picture hook), a hollow-wall anchor or a molly or toggle bolt (bolts that have wings that expand when inserted into the wall). Plaster holds masonry bits and wall anchors well. Masonry or brick surfaces are harder surfaces on which to hang pictures, but you can try a masonry bit.
4. Measure from the taut wire (tighten the wire if it's not tight) or the hanging tab on the back of the frame to the frame's top edge. Measure down that distance from the pencil mark you made on the wall. Mark that spot as the spot where the hook will go.
5. Insert your hook into the wall with a hammer where you made the mark.
6. To position the picture on the wall for hanging, guide the picture onto the hook and adjust it straight, without scraping the top edges of the frame along the wall.
7. Sit back and enjoy your new wall decor!
Do It Yourself or Hire a Pro The "do-it-yourself" – DIY – trend is big, as evidenced by the popularity of home improvement television shows and magazines, building supply store seminars and the abundance of information on the Internet. But before arming yourself with new power tools and how to books, determine if your remodeling job is really a do-it-yourselfer or would be better left to a pro.
Assess your skills. Do you have the experience and skills, not to mention the tools, to do the job? Do you have friends with experience that can help? Do you have the necessary knowledge of building codes and regulations?
Is it worth your time? Doing it yourself saves labor costs and if you enjoy what you're doing, all the better. But remember that your time is worth something too. Would it be more worthwhile to spend weekends doing other things than remodeling the basement? And will you save that much if you have to buy expensive, specialized tools that will never be used again or if you make mistakes and have to replace expensive materials? (Keep in mind that contractors typically get their materials at a discount.)
Do you have the time to do it – and to live with it? Remodeling jobs can be messy. When you hire a professional, you have a better chance of getting the project done on a tighter schedule – and dealing with less of a mess. If you do it yourself and can devote yourself to the project fully, you may be spreading it out over weeks, months or even years – and living all that time in a construction zone.
Is duct cleaning necessary? Duct cleaning advertisements are often included in newspapers and direct mailing campaigns delivered to the family mailbox. Duct cleaning seems like something that would make sense to do. However, is it worth the effort and expense? Unless a person suffers from allergies or there's an infestation, most experts say, no.
Homeowners with central heating and air conditioning systems have a series of ducts going through their home to deliver the hot and cool air. Over time these ducts will accumulate dust, debris and other particles that have not been filtered out through the system. Those concerned with indoor air pollution may consider having the ducts cleaned to eliminate potential hazards.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that unless individuals in the home are prone to allergies, have unexplained illnesses, or if visual duct inspection reveals significant dust accumulation or mold growth, then it probably isn't necessary to have them cleaned. What's more, duct cleaning hasn't been linked to health improvements or prevention of illnesses, says the EPA. If the ducts show a considerable amount of collected debris or if there is an insect, mold or rodent infestation in the ductwork, then hiring a professional cleaning service is recommended by the EPA.
For most homeowners, maintaining ducts can be a do-it-yourself project. Simply removing the intake grating and vacuuming any collected dust and debris can cut down on particles blown through the system. Homeowners can also remove the venting at the air registers that expel the air throughout the house and clean inside those openings. Most experts agree if there is dust stuck to ducts, it's likely to stay put and doesn't warrant any thorough cleaning or sealing.
However, for those who want the extra peace of mind duct cleaning may provide, consider these tips.
* Do not assume that all air duct cleaning businesses are equally knowledgeable or reputable. Contact three or four companies and ask for written estimates.
* Avoid companies that provide broad claims about the medical benefits of air duct cleaning. Most claims are unsubstantiated.
* Contact the city office of consumer affairs or local Better Business Bureau to ensure no complaints have been lodged against this duct cleaning business.
* Ask for references to verify professionalism and quality of work.
* Ensure that the cleaner inspects the ducts prior to starting a project. This helps ensure no asbestos-containing materials, which require very specific methods of cleaning, are present.
